A case study is essentially a process or record of research into the development of a particular product, group, or situation over a period of time.

Case studies are an effective tool to showcase the value of a product or service and establish the commissioning company or an individual as an industry expert.

Case studies that I provide copy editing and proof-reading services for are:

Explanatory 

o The explanatory case study is type of case study focuses on an explanation for a question or a phenomenon. The results are not for interpretation. For example, a print business explaining a new printing process to publish and promote to its customers, positioning themselves as an industry expert.

Exploratory

o The exploratory case study is usually the precursor to a formal, large-scale research project. The case study's goal is to prove that further investigation is necessary. For example, a charity investigating the number of women who have sought refuge at a women’s shelter in the past six months and their reasoning as to why. This would be used to present to local government/council to encourage a larger study to explain why this is happening and how they can provide more sustainable long term support services.

Instrumental 

o An instrumental case study uses a case to gain insights into a phenomenon. For example, a small coffee shop interested in understanding if clients would adopt the usage of more environmentally friendly reusable coffee cups. They conduct a study, offering a batch of discounted reusable cups to assess how many of the same clients will reuse the cup, or continue to request a disposable cup. The results of study would tell them if it is worthwhile investing in this new product range.
